Yes, NT4 did need a reinstall if you changed the number of processors, even though the standard Nt4 server supported 1-2 CPUs. It REALLY irrritated a sysadmin I knew... As for Win2k, I'd go with what Samson says as he's had proper professional training BUT Win2k is based on NT technologies, NOT all of NT4, 2k (or NT5 when you get right down to it) is more flexible and as long as the 2k server you have has the kernel support for the level of SMP you want, then it is just a matter of informing H

I can't be 100% sure it's as easy as my MCP testing makes it out, but supposedly all you need to do with a Win2K box - Server or Pro - is add the second CPU, and then update the HAL ( Hardware Abstraction Layer ) to one that supports 2 CPUs. Might want to check with the Microsoft site and see what they say about doing that. I've never had ocassion to need a second CPU so I have no idea how this would be done

Howdy guys Just built a new Email server at work - running on a compaq server SMP capable, but only 1 proccy at the moment , cause our supplier sent the wrong speed proccy (damnasses) Question is this: I heard that with NT4 if you upgraded from Single Proccy to Dual Proccy, you had to reinstall the OS so that the Kernal knew that you had 2 proccies. Can someone validate this info - or tell me that it was a load of crap, and that I can pull the server down for 5 minutes at 3am and stick the
