I believe that I was also influenced by Bard's Tale on the C64! That and Wizardry on my first Intel machine (a 386 Compaq). I even used the same character name back then that I use now. Amalric is like an alter ego that goes everywhere and everywhen with me. He was my D & D ranger in high school (when the basic rule set was the ONLY rule set!) I got started on the mud scene quite late because I was heavily into the BBS stuff before that. There were some mud style games there as well, most notably MajorMUD, and some other thing that was similar but wasn't that. I even still have the maps from whatever that was.
