Not sure why no one saw this. The zecho snippet doesn't echo to the area at all. Change the "ch" to "d->character" in the printf:
  for(d = first_descriptor; d; d = d->next)
   if(d->character && d->character->in_room->area == pArea)
    pager_printf_color(d->character, "%s\n\r", argument);
