So far as I can tell from some Google searching, both IMC and I3 are dead. That's probably not very surprising given that connections to both services are unencrypted and security awareness has come a long way in 24 years.

The only page I was able to find about any of it is a broken rendering of an old I3 router listing from 2014. So it seems the website tracking the routers themselves has been dead for 10 years too.

A post on reddit indicates that what few MUDs still exist and are interested in these kinds of things are either using some kind of partial Discord bridge or using a service called Grapevine which requires a stupid number of external libraries to make it work.

Honestly given the nature of the beast it might be wise to remove it from the codebases we serve here. Unencrypted communication in 2024 is not only unwise, but probably outright dangerous.

Well, now I don't feel so bad about gutting all the IMC/I3 stuff from my own code. :imp:

Just got rid of it from AFKMud and committed the results last night.

Genuine question - should we remove it from the FUSS bases? Technically speaking IMC2 is a feature of Smaug 1.8b, but it was during a time when the networks were all still alive and one could expect to connect somewhere. There's nowhere to do that now and even if there were, it would be risky due to the lack of encrypted connection support.

So yeah. I'm sure it's become obvious already, but these were removed from all of the FUSS bases.

It's kind of funny to think that after all the old dramas and such that pretty much everyone who ever involved themselves in it is long gone, but we're still here :P
