After floating the idea briefly over IMC, it's been decided that the content of the afkmud.com site and fussproject.org will be combined to launch a larger Smaug community site that will focus more on general development and discussions. AFKmud will continue to exist as part of the new site's focus, including the bugfix list. Over the next few weeks I will be working on backing up content from the afkmud.com forums to be merged into the content on fussproject.org.

Since both sites share a large overlap in membership I figure consolidating them will be an overall benefit to everyone. The Smaug community is currently spread out all over the place and has no really well defined central location where folks can gather to discuss issues. There are also disturbing trends in play at what few general resource sites have Smaug subsections in them.

I have purchased the domain smaugmuds.org and will be assigning it as the primary domain for the server once the contents have been merged. The afkmud.com and fussproject.org domains will become redirectors at that time which will point to the updated and expanded site. But let me stress that this is NOT the case now, so don't update any of your bookmarks just yet.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on what else to include with the updated site, feel free to comment here. I'm hopeful that it will become a valuable resource for Smaug users everywhere.

FYI - As it turns out it's going to be simpler in the end to take the stuff here and move it to the afkmud.com site instead and make the merged result there. There's information in the afkmud.com database that is used by Alsherok as well.

Also, there's significantly less non-forum content to move from the fuss site to here. As such, I'm going to freeze all further member registrations on this side while I clean up the database in preparation.

And that took significantly less time than I though it would. :)

It certainly happened faster than I'd expected too.

Something I figured I'd mention while I'm hunting down old forum links to edit, if you've externally referenced a specific topic number in a link, like so:

http://smaugmuds.afkmods.com/index.php?a=topic&t=1368

that still links to the old domain, add 1369 to the t= value.

http://smaugmuds.afkmods.com/index.php?a=topic&t=1368&p=9364#p9364

For specific posts, att 5184 to the p= and #p values. This will get the links pointed back to where they belong instead of a random crapshoot picked from some old AFKMud post.

It did indeed happen very quickly. I'm glad to see a smooth transition.

Hope everything goes well with the new site, Samson. I'll be lurking about and responding to a general thread here and there, so you'll definitely see me here now and then :cyclops:

Great that it all went through! Looks like this thread is missing a few posts, though. :)

Is it? Shouldn't be unless people managed to post stuff on the old site before I closed the domain. If this thread is all that's missing stuff it's not a big problem :P

How could a thread that didn't exist before the merger be missing posts due to the merger? Or are you just implying that more folks should be piiping up to congratulate Samson on the move?

Wasn't this the thread where you talked about login cookies? And where I asked about codebase risks etc.? I'm almost completely positive that at least the first post of this thread existed before the merger began... in fact, it looks like the first two posts were there before the merger began.

Also, it might be good to change the logo on the site from "fuss project" to "smaugmuds" or something similar. :)

You're probably right now that I think about it. After I had the contents merged I pulled some duplicate topics and this was one of them. Maybe I should have read them a bit closer before doing that :P

As far as the graphic, I lack that kind of talent for even simple jobs. Perhaps someone with graphical talent would be interested in designing something? :)

Oh, that makes sense then. :) I was starting to think I had gone crazy and invented posts or something. :P

I can do the graphic. I'll do something similar, nothing fancy, using a slightly different font; does that sound good? Any ideas for the sub-title?

E.g.:

smaugmuds.org
----------------------
a SMAUG MUD community

??

I've been liberally tagging forum sigs and promotional postings with:

SmaugMuds.org

The Smaug MUDs Community Center

So if that will fit, that's perfect. Would be cool to be able to tack a couple of dragon heads on it at either end looking toward each other but that might be getting a bit much :)

I can't produce, I can only arrange... so if you give me dragon heads, I will cheerfully arrange them, otherwise you're out of luck. :P

Otherwise, I'll see what I can do about getting that to fit. I'll do it later tonight, I think.

Well conveniently we have dragon heads - on the big yellow guy already. Maybe copying his head and putting one on the right, looking left, and one on the left, looking right? I guess it depends on how cheesy that turns out :P

Well, I'll give it a shot and we'll see how it turns out... I agree that it might look a bit cheesy, though.

You know, I think you're right about that too, I'd not realized this was the same thread and was thinking this was the thread announcing that the merger had taken place.

You want them looking at each other? Over the words? Would it look better if they were looking out from the two ends of the words (bookend style)? ...oh well, Guess I'll see how it looks once it's finished.
