What was your first intro to mudding (What was your first mud?) Sorry for asking such a dumb question, I'm just curious. When did you first try it, and what drew you back? I'll share mine. The first time I ever played a mud, it was on AOL, called Gemstone III, what drew me to it, was that it reminded a lot of some all text adventures I played in days past, like Pirate Adventure, Zork, and Planetfall (never really got far in that one) on my old C64. Anyway, I'm really interested in what people have to say.

My first actual mud was one called Crystal Shard, back in late 1995 or so. I got started on the mud scene quite late because I was heavily into the BBS stuff before that. There were some mud style games there as well, most notably MajorMUD, and some other thing that was similar but wasn't that. I even still have the maps from whatever that was.

I've been big on CRPG's ever since I went out and bought myself a copy of The Bards' Tale for the C-64 back in 1986.... damn... such a long time ago....

The first Mud I ever played on was NannyMUD sometime in either '92 or '93. I believe that I was also influenced by Bard's Tale on the C64! That and Wizardry on my first Intel machine (a 386 Compaq). I even used the same character name back then that I use now. Amalric is like an alter ego that goes everywhere and everywhen with me. He was my D & D ranger in high school (when the basic rule set was the ONLY rule set!) IMHO, that is where mudding's roots truly lie.

Mine wasn't all that long ago it seems. The first mud I played was called Gundam Wing MUD. Needless to say I spent several hours of my life on that game. Anyways, it had trouble and went down. About a day or two after I discovered Gundam Wing MUD (thanks to my brother), I also found AvatarMUD, which I still play to this day. I don't get on much, but when I do I manage to gain a few levels, especially during a HoG-a-thon. It will win no award for roleplaying, but they did a fantastic job with their mud otherwise. All of the classess are balanced pretty evenly, and there are several races to choose from (such as elf, ents, slugs, goblins, kziniti and other usuals). Levels 1-50 are considered mortal, but when you hit level 51 you are considered a hero. You then are able to gain a whole slew of new spells and what not, most from other classess. You then have 999 sub levels as a hero, in which at some point (I think level 500+) you remort into a Lord (level 52, process repeats, lvl 999 lord is max currently). The greater your level, the greater your chance of remorting successfully.

Its up and running at avatar.outland.org:3000 if you want to check it out. I'm Odis/Syncarny/Syncarn (damn spelling mistakes in character names), so send me a tell if you see me on.

Oh, and for you bard's tale lovers, take a look at http://www.thebardstale.com It appears they have a new one As a side note about this, be careful where you put your mouse. If you happen to move it over the womens breasts it may send you to http://sexualharrassment.com

Interesting. Realms of Despair was my first MUD. I've never escaped SMAUG since. (poor me) I started that when I was in Gr.7, and I've just gone and finished University. 8-9 years I guess.

Boy was I young and silly then. Was a builder on more than one failed MUDs before I even av'd on RoD. Ended up amassing a huge fortune on RoD and retiring from lack of interest. Couldn't get me back there nowadays, I just chat to old friends occasionally, it's horrible.

That's why I started my MUD, RoD just didn't do it for me anymore.
Now I just need to get some more players back and I'll be happy

Forgotten Kingdoms was my first. Probably why I'm so anal about RP.
