Just an open-ended question about your favorite MUD client. Don't want to start a flame war (vi rules! ;), just tell why you like the client.

I'm rather fond of mcl (check freshmeat.net) running in a screen. Unfortunately I haven't really found a MUD client for Windows that I can get comfortable with, open source or not. I've just been ssh'ing into my linux box and running mcl. Heh.

Personally, I favor a client called gMUDix, it's fairly simple to use and works well and supports a surprising number of extras in the way of triggers, aliases, timers, etc. It's written for linux, but runs under windows too (with a small dos window that pops up and can be safely ignored since it's just voicing complaints about expected fonts and such but can't be closed without also shutting down the client), but of course, I live primarily in linux and only use windows when I'm traveling or playing windows games for the most part. *shrug*

I've tried out a few others, and the mud magic client isn't too bad, though it's primary author isn't worth supporting.. Zmud is a really popular one, but it's pricey, compared to free, and has some other issues as well.. besides, it doesn't run under linux so well and has far more bells and whistles than I have need for. :sad:

After those, well, if you don't need aliases/triggers/etc in your client, nothing beats straight telnet, particularly under linux. :wink:

For Windows I'm favoring SimpleMU right now. Haven't found anything else yet that strikes a balance between features and usefulness for me. SimpleMU seems to have pretty much stopped development but it's still more than adequate for my needs. The other clients are either too bloated or too skimpy.

For Linux, I'd choose Kmuddy all the way. Hell, I'd use Kmuddy if it had a Windows port too.

Maybe this one should've been done as a poll, though the potential list of clients out there is fairly staggering, but it might've been neat to see who's using which clients represented graphically too, at least among those who'd bother taking the poll. *shrug*

Heh. Might have been somewhat helpful as a poll, but it's a bit late for that now. Might be something we can look into adding to QSF, tacking on a poll after the fact. Might look into that as part of a consolidation of the "new topic" button down the road.

Well, another option would be to gather all the client names and set it up as a poll over at mudbytes. :wink:
But it would be kind of neat to be able to add a poll after the fact too, I suppose.

For windows I have to say, I liked Z-mud as well,
but I also found that Al-Client was a very stable and nice program.

Its small and easy to use.

Right now there are 51 people on SlothMUD. Out of those clients that identify themselves to us;
Wintin.NET 21
ZMUD 11
Mushclient 2
Tintin++ 1

Obviously my favorite is Wintin.NET(MXP, MCCP, incredibly fast, etc) since it is created by one of my fellow creators William Lees :-)
