I am definitely one to give credit where credit is due. That being said, the long list of credit in most SMAUG greetings is becoming rather large and taking up a lot of space in the greeting..

PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG... but as I understand it, I am supposed to put credit in the "login sequence" ... not the "greeting" specifically.

So what I have done is added this to my greeting:

To see the licensing information, type
"HELP LICENSE".

and after typing HELP LICENSE, they see this:

SmaugFUSS 1.9 changes by Samson.
Other bugfixes and changes provided by various members of the SMAUG
community. Their contributions are greatly appreciated.SMAUG 1.4 written by
Thoric (Derek Snider) with Altrag, Blodkai, Haus, Narn,Scryn, Swordbearer,
Tricops, Gorog, Rennard, Grishnakh, Fireblade and Nivek. Original MERC 2.1
code by Hatchet, Furey, and Kahn.Original DikuMUD code by:Hans Staerfeldt,
Katja Nyboe, Tom Madsen, Michael Seifert && Sebastian Hammer.

since this IS in the login sequence, in all technicality... am I compliant?

I would say it depends. Is it optional? Can people -not- type that and still log in?

You should be fine putting it anywhere during the process of logging into the game so long as it is ALWAYS visible to someone whether they are logging in fresh or reconnecting.

"Login Sequence" is basically any screen that will always display before someone is actually able to play the game, and it must display without the need for the user to ask for it.

Thanks samson. Then I shall edit it for MOTD display. The main concern was being able to move it off the greeting itself

would this mean I would also have to put it in the "reconnecting" display? if they are reconnecting, then the player has already seen the MOTD and credits initially.

just trying to make things look good without taking due credit away

edit: nevermind. sorry, I am tired.. i just re-read your response and you specifically said "or reconnecting".

I am just going to force another MOTD look at reconnect to solve that. Thanks!

That's what I thought, for this reason:

Just my $.02, but trying to obscure the credits in any way shape or form or make them less prominent can rub people in the community the wrong way (and not just players). It's a fine line to walk with rather low tolerance for stepping over. There are few things worse than being branded a code thief. Definitely a good choice to get clarification rather than make a potentially bad assumption.

no worries. I have already moved it to the MOTD/IMOTD so it always displays no matter what. I'm not public yet so no one got by without seeing it.

No foul :)

edit: never an intent to be shady, which is precisely why I asked for clarification here :) I knew someone would correct me if I was wrong in any way lol!
